OS Aid and pulling your weight

How about we have a serious look at what Australia contribute to OS aid and compare that to 2 Middle Eastern countries and Sweden from the perspective of the Millennium Project.

  • Israel because its the cause of the Palestinian refugee issue.
  • Saudi Arabia as it is a wealth country in the Arab world that we should rightly expect to at least match Australia.
  • Sweden as they appear in the top of all donation lists.
  • Australia because I believe we aren't doing near enough.

The Millennium Project

0.7 refers to the repeated commitment of the world's governments to commit 0.7% of rich-countries' gross national product (GNP) to Official Development Assistance.

GNP and GDP vary, roughly they are similar. GDP is the measure I'm using as it is more often reported.

Israel

GDP = $290.6 billion USD
.7% = $2.03 billion
Actual contribution UNHCR = $100,000
Pledges to UNRWA (Cash and In-kind) for 2014 in USD = $0.00
UNRWA's Syria Appeal* =  $0
Contribution to the Red Cross/Crescent = $0

Total $100,000

Israel's contribution to UNHCR $0.0001 billion a mere $100K. It cost 4 times more than this for Netanyahu to put a sleeping capsule on his plane for the 4 hour trip to London! His monthly ice-cream bill in 10K or $120K a year.

Saudi Arabia

Saudis have offered to build 200 Mosques in Europe for the refugees. Very nice of them. How do they stack up?

GDP 748.4 billion USD (2013)
.7 % = $4.06 billion
Actual contribution UNHCR $13,698,670
Pledges to UNRWA (Cash and In-kind) for 2014 in USD = $2,000,000
UNRWA's Syria Appeal* =  $380,000 - 0 (unknown)
Contribution to the Red Cross/Crescent = $0

Total $15,698,670

Sweden

GDP 579.7 billion
.7% = $10.9 billion
Actual contribution to UNHCR $117,915,465
Pledges to UNRWA (Cash and In-kind) for 2014 in USD = $43,007,473
UNRWA's Syria Appeal* =  $2,696,872
Contribution to the Red Cross/Crescent = $27.1 million

Total $190,719,810

Australia

GDP 1,560 billion
.7% = $10.9 billion
Actual contribution to UNHCR $48,379,940
Pledges to UNRWA (Cash and In-kind) for 2014 in USD = $18,383,137
UNRWA's Syria Appeal* =  $380,000 - 0 (unknown)
Contribution to the Red Cross/Crescent is = $9.3 million

Total $76,063,077

Conclusion

Ask yourself, why is it that Australia and Sweden make a serious effort when clearly Saudi Arabia effort is low and Israel's is near nonexistent. In fact Israel's effort is very real and extremely negative, it sucks a massive level of aid from the US which should rightly go to far more needy nations. There are other contribution nations make, this is a sampler based several which are likely to have a positive impact on the desperate situation in Syria.

Please take the time to review the core data in the references. It is not the goal here to look at all countries. You can review the UNHCR Donation List and get a pretty good idea of who is making a serious contribution.

Notes

* Only the top 20 donors are listed in the report. UNHCR with $389,044 is 20th on the list. $380,000 - 0 (unknown) where they may have been a small contribution. Clearly we can assume Israel has given nothing based on other donation efforts.
